NEW HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVE USERS
Hormonal contraceptives (HC’s) are the most widely used method of contraception in the world today. Despite this widespread use, 20-50% of adult women and 60% or adolescents who begin taking HC’s will discontinue it within a year. The highest rate of discontinuation of HCs occurs within the first few months of use. The major reason for discontinuation is the occurrence of side effects such as nausea, mood changes, fatigue, PMS and depression.
Studies have shown that many of the side effects experienced by new users are related to nutritional deficiencies caused by HC’s. Common deficiencies include B-complex vitamins, antioxidant micronutrients and key trace minerals. Correcting these deficiencies can significantly decrease the side effects and provide for a more positive experience for the new user.
It has been reported that depression occurs in as many as 56% of women using oral contraceptives and severe depression occurs in about 5-6% of women. A deficiency of vitamin B6 can limit the brain’s ability to synthesize serotonin. Low serotonin levels are associated with depression.
Supplementation of B6 and other B complex vitamins has been shown to not only decrease the incidence of depression, but also decrease the severity of nausea, PMS, fatigue and mood changes.
FEMTABS are uniquely formulated to address the nutritional needs of new HC users. The B complex vitamins minimize potential unwanted side effects and provide nutritional support to help insure a successful start for new HC users. FEMTABS also contains an antioxidant and mineral complex to help insure nutritional stability for long term use.
NEW ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE USERS
Oral contraceptives (OC’s) are the most widely used method of contraception in the world today. Despite this widespread use, 20-50% of adult women and 60% or adolescents who begin taking OC’s will discontinue it within a year. The highest rate of discontinuation of OCs occurs within the first few months of use. The major reason for discontinuation is the occurrence of side effects such as nausea, mood changes, fatigue, PMS and depression.
Studies have shown that many of the side effects experienced by new users are related to nutritional deficiencies caused by OC’s. Common deficiencies include vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, and folic acid. Correcting these deficiencies can significantly decrease the side effects and provide for a more positive experience for the new user.
